I’m sure glad I didn’t make any promises to not write about the dog every day. Last year the Indigo Girls, this year Flora the Adora. The landing of this dog-shaped meteor has given me a definite theme to latch onto.
I just keyed into a conversation with a friend that I had earlier today that strikes me as being relevant here in Yesod SheBeMalchut. We hadn’t really had a chance to catch up since Flora’s arrival on our little scene, and he asked me how it was going. My initial response, brief though it was, expressed quite a lot of the overwhelm I had been feeling (which is, fortunately really subsiding at this point). He said something like, “What’s the big adjustment? You walk the dog 2 or 3 times a day...” I took a breath and thought about what I wanted to say for a few moments. How could I better express what this has been like? “The Presence of this dog has required each of us to become an elevated version of ourselves,” I said. “Wow,” he said.
Shechina comes in funny shapes and forms sometimes. Just the period of discernment around the decision to invite a dog into our lives was a definite Foundation and Connection building process. We’ve had to be so attentive to each other’s feelings and Realities, and have, for the most part, been very willing to do so. Now, here we are living with her - Flora the Adora, Flora the Explora (you should see her when she goes into a scent reverie...) - having to work our Connection muscles in a whole new way inside this new Reality.
I seriously wonder if it’s this much of a mental/emotional/spiritual shake-up for everyone, or if that’s just part of our particular family system. Whatever it is, I’ll take it. As most of you know about me, I’m always up for a good spiritual exploration. If Flora the Explora is to be my guide for a while, so be it!
